World War II proved to be one of the major historical events in the entire world. The incidents which took place during that time were published in countless books and have since been taught to children in school. For most people, World War II caused trauma and became the reason for them to leave their old lives and star anew in another place.
Such is the story of a woman named Madame De Florian who lived through the reign of Nazis in France. The old woman was only 23 years old back in 1939 when the German army took over their place in Paris.
According to reports, Madame De Florian was forced to flee her home along with her family and move to a part of France where the war hasn’t ensued. Even after the war, the woman never returned to her old apartment but still managed to pay the rent for 70 years until her death in 2010.
Her children then noticed that a small part of her money had been going to the payment for this apartment which is why they decided to reclaim it after all these decades.
They then sent an auctioneer, Olivier Choppin-Janvry to check the apartment and do an inventory of the objects left inside. Once he opened the doors to it, he was stunned by what he saw.
Much to his surprise, he saw a number of priceless artworks and countless other items which gave them a glimpse of a time long-forgotten.
Like a time capsule which has been buried for 70 long years, the apartment of Madame De Florian remained untouched and was left as it is when she abandoned it.
Inside one of the rooms sat her vanity mirror with all her expensive perfumes are lined up in a row. There were also vintage toys sitting in one corner of the room seemingly waiting for children to play with them.
But what really caught the attention of the auctioneer were the expensive paintings still hanging on the walls of the old apartment.
Janvry managed to find a portrait of Madame De Florian’s mother, Marthe, from the Belle Epoque-era painted by Italian legend, Giovanni Boldini.
The painting sold for a whopping $3.4 million during an auction. It went as high as that amount when rumors spread that Boldini and her mother used to be lovers.
