Leslie David is an Ontario, Canada-based photographer who is drawn to the sad allure of abandoned homes. Going by the Instagram handle “The Tourist,” Leslie looks for and explores abandoned homes and takes beautiful photographs of them.
One day, Leslie encountered a seemingly abandoned home - a derelict house covered in overgrowth.
Leslie entered, thinking nobody was inside. It’s hard to blame her as the house looked like nobody had lived in it for decades. However, she was shocked to find someone inside. An old man named Lawrence.
Leslie told Lawrence’s story through photos and Instagram captions. She narrates his heartbreaking tale, stating that he lives alone, he is missing his right eye as a cataract spreads through his remaining one. Leslie felt sympathy for Lawrence, and she decided she would visit him as often as she could.
True to her word, Leslie did. She made a new friend in Lawrence and they have shared many a meal together ever since they met. Leslie narrates that she brings food to her new friend.
During one particular visit, Lawrence told Leslie that he had suffered a stroke 4 days prior.
Deeply concerned, Leslie reassures Lawrence that she is there for him. He needed a friend and he certainly has found on in “the Tourist.”
Leslie was heartbroken to discover that Lawrence’s health was in rapid decline. Luckily, Lawrence was eventually admitted into a retirement home, where he is doing much better. Leslie takes her dog Violet with her during her visits to her friend.
Leslie emphasizes how blessed she feels to have met Lawrence. She says the old man is truly a blessing and he has changed her life in immeasurable ways. She greets him happy birthday and posts a photo of the old man, all smiles.
