Indie film actress and comedienne Candy Pangilinan did not candy-coat her motherhood experience with Quentin, her child with mild autism during an episode of Magandang Buhay last Wednesday, August 30.
During the show, things quickly turned emotional for the guest and the hosts, Karla Estrada, Jolina Magdangal, and Melai Cantiveros.
Candy’s son was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) plus a ‘high sensory integration problem.’ It is a brain disorder that makes it difficult for a child to sustain focus on one thing. Because of autism, Quentin has a hard time accomplishing simple tasks and lacks fine motor skills.
For the comedienne, it was no easy feat to single-handedly raise a child like hers. In fact, it saddens her to see Quentin left out during play.
“Kunwari may birthday party, tapos maglalaro lahat ng bata, si Quentin nakikitakbo. Kapag dalawa lang sila maglalaro sila; kapag dumami na sila, makikita mong iniiwan.
“Pero okay lang. Hindi ako nagagalit sa mga bata kasi mga bata sila. Kasi ang nangyayari naiintindihan ko na hindi nila naiintindihan the way na magsalita, kaya siguro di sila nakikipaglaro.”
It is costly to take care of a child with autism. Quentin has daily therapy, on top of his schooling. The therapy reinforces authority and skills development to make him more sociable and able.
Nowadays, Quentin can express himself and constantly talks to his mom, albeit in short phrases and words. His favorite place to hang out? The church. “Pero ang pinakagusto talaga niya, ‘Let’s go to church,’” Candy tells the hosts because Quentin loves to attend mass.
Tears overflowed again when Candy read a short note from Quentin, which said: “Thank you. I love you, Mommy.” She explained the reason for her tears. “Naiiyak ako kasi natutuwa ako with the development of my child. Ang laki na ng development niya, nakakapag-usap na kami, nakakapag-sulat na siya.” Before, Quentin wasn’t able to write anything at all.
Candy’s touching message to her son will surely bring some sniffles, too. “Quentin, thank you for being you. 'Yung totoo lang talaga Quentin is my ticket to heaven, sigurado ako. You're always a blessing not only to me but to the people around you. I know that God gave you to me for a reason and God gave me to you for a reason, kaya matching tayo, kaya natin ito.”
